Almost everyone gets a headache now and then, but frequent headaches can disrupt work, sleep and family life. The good news is that most headaches follow patterns. With a little detective work, you can often find your personal triggers, cut down how often headaches happen and treat them more effectively when they do.

Know your headache type

Tension headaches feel like a tight band around the head and often come with stiff shoulders. Migraines tend to throb on one side and may bring nausea, sensitivity to light or visual changes. Sinus pressure, eye strain and too much caffeine can also cause headaches. Knowing which type you have helps you choose the right treatment.

Track your triggers

Keep a simple headache diary for a few weeks. Note when each headache starts, how strong it is and what you ate, drank and did beforehand. Common triggers include skipped meals, dehydration, poor sleep, stress, bright screens, strong smells, alcohol and hormonal changes. Patterns often appear quickly once you write them down.

Ease the pain the smart way

Rest in a quiet, dim room, sip water and try a cool cloth on your forehead or a warm one on your neck. Over-the-counter pain relief can help, but using it on many days each month can actually cause rebound headaches. If you need pain relief often, speak with a doctor about a prevention plan instead.

Habits that help prevent headaches

Small daily changes can make a big difference:

  • Eat regular meals and do not skip breakfast
  • Drink water steadily through the day
  • Keep the same sleep and wake times
  • Take screen breaks and check your posture
  • Make time to relax and stretch your neck
A headache diary turns guesswork into clues, and clues into a plan that works for you.

Doctor's tip: Seek urgent care for a sudden, severe headache, or one that comes with fever, a stiff neck, confusion, weakness or trouble speaking. These need checking straight away.
